"Do you find it hard to focus or think ADHD is holding you back in business? I used to feel the same way until I transformed it into my superpower. Let me show you how."
When I was a kid, I was off the walls. School bored me. I couldn’t sit still and pay attention to the teacher. I was prescribed a 60mg adderall at 8 years old and only weighed about 80 lbs. It made me feel like a zombie. The teachers thought I wouldn’t amount to much. I felt numb. By 12 years old, I never took ADHD medication ever again.
I ended up with the last laugh because over the past few years, I’ve started and sold two companies, been able to travel the world, stay in luxury 5-star hotels, and bought my dream car, a Porsche 911.
Now, those same teachers reach out to me to come speak to their students.
But how did I get here? Here are some strategies that I've found useful, and I believe they can work for you too:
Number 1: Use your anger as your motivation.
No one ever accomplished anything without a massive drive or desire. I used the teachers and kids that used to make fun of me at school to gain an edge. In other words you want to tap into your dark side. It’s funny years later I read the book Relentless by Michael Grover who was Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan’s coach and he said that both of them used anger to motivate them to switch into a different gear and intensify their focus
So think about the people who piss you off, talked bad about you, and that you want to prove wrong.
Number 2: Block Out Distractions
We live in a noisy world. With content, social media notifications, constant texts, emails, and so many temptations. While you’re doing your head down focused work, one way to block out distractions is to use the BrainFM app with binaural beats to help you stay centered.
Also just, have just one tab open at a time. Multiple tabs can be distracting and drain your energy. I also love to use noise-canceling headphones to further block out noise.
Number 3: Sprint Sessions
Obviously you can’t focus for 8 hours straight very few people can do that. What I try to do is block out 90 minute sessions to spring or go hard and intensively focus on a key task that I need to get done. Then after the 90 minutes are up I take a 15 minute break then I jump back in and do my next sprint session. A hack that I use to help me stay focused is I have a kitchen timer on my desk that counts down the time and I find that it helps create urgency for me to stay focused.
Number 4: Creative Work In The Morning
Now for some of you it could be the opposite. But I’m a morning person and any time i have to do something creative, whether it’s come up with a strategy, analyze a problem, my mind comes up with the best ideas in the morning. By 4PM I’m exhausted from doing intense work. So I’d rather do my intense work in the morning and then do my meetings and other tasks that don’t take as much focus in the afternoon.
Number 5: Drink Coffee
Now I try to not drink more than 2 coffees per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. As someone who has ADHD I hated adderall and all of those medications and when I was 16 my mom introduced me to coffee and it does really help me. I recommend one in the morning and one after lunch.
Number 6: Fast Until 12PM
It’s really interesting that I focus more on an empty stomach. I will drink coffee, but in the morning, I find that I can really focus without having food in my system. I find that when I eat, I oftentimes feel tired afterward. So I find if I can fast until noon, I tend to get more done. This might not work for everyone, and you should consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet.
Number 7: Never Multitask
I’ve found that my brain literally can’t do more than one thing at once. And everytime that I try to multitask I do a worse job than if I gave something my undivided and full attention.
Number 8: Focus on 3 Leveraged Activities
I notice a lot of people think they are productive by being busy and cranking out a to do list. I actually think thats wrong and not productive. Less is more. If you can find the leveraged activities. Meaning the things that drive the most results with the least amount of efforts that is the most productive thing you can do. For example for a salesperson it’s prospecting, crafting personalized cold emails, making cold calls, writing content. Things that are going to move the needle for whatever your goals are. So block out time the day before and think about your goals and think what if I could only be allowed to do 3 tasks today what would those tasks be that if I did those that I feel like I’m contributing most to my goals.
Number 9: Workout
Cardio and lifting weights. I notice if I don’t block out at least 60 minutes a day to do one or the other I go nuts and my attention goes everywhere. Working out at least 4-5 times per week is key for keeping your focus.
Number 10: Daydream Time
This last one might sound crazy but with ADHD you’re fighting for that need to want to zone out. So I actually like to use a calendar to block out think time or time to not be interrupted to think. This could be to think about my business or personal life. Analyze what’s working, what’s not working, what could I do better. How could I handle a certain problem? Brainstorming time. Most people are running around with their heads chopped off. By doing this it allows you to actually be more productive and be conscious of what you’re doing on a daily basis.
So hopefully you found this helpful and it helps you stay focused more. If you did please like and share it.
