After years of struggle, Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North of Richmond” shot to the top of the U.S. Apple Music and iTunes Country charts, racking up over 9 million views in just five days. From obscurity to the spotlight which shifted almost overnight.
I call this transformation from the shadows to the limelight the "Oliver Anthony Effect"
Most entrepreneurs, including me at the beginning, doubt they can experience such a huge shift in getting attention and credibility. But with the right strategy you can make it happen.
When I started my company, Order Solutions, I felt defeated, frustrated, and lost, probably similar to how Oliver Anthony might have felt before his breakout hit.
I had a great startup concept but was clueless about getting in front of the right audience.
Then something almost eerie happened. A friend of mine mentioned that they got a ton of PR through a site called PR Newswire.
He said you could get featured in publications like Yahoo finance, Forbes, and other major publications.
I felt excited, nervous, and not certain if I should believe that this could actually be the linchpin to jumpstart my business.
Out of desperation I tried it and was literally shocked by the results. We did actually get featured in some big publications. It was the first sign of relief I had since I started my business.
I finally felt like it was some positive momentum. But the eyeballs I was getting werent’ really my ideal audience. It would be like showing an Oliver Anthony song to someone who like rap music.
I wanted to sell my services to the world’s largest restaurant chains. I needed to figure out how to get known in that market.
I sat in my office in deep thought and thought about what I could do with all of these big name features I got. How could I leverage them?
Then I thought what publications does my dream clients read? I started doing some google searches and found out about Nations Restaurant news, QSR Magazine, and Fast Casual Magazine.
I thought to myself I don’t want to have to pay for any more PR. But I’d love to get into these magazines.
I thought to myself I wonder what would happen if I reached out to the editors of these magazine on LinkedIn and said that we were just featured in these bigger publications but thought it would be great if they wrote an article on their sites since our ideal customers were reading their site.
I went on LinkedIn and found and started messaging the journalists and editors who had written articles on those sites and shared with them a link to the press release. And asked them if they’d like to write an article.
Within 24 hours we were featured on both sites and not only that. We started getting picked up on tons of their restaurant publications. Not only that we started getting inbound leads from these sites from major restaurant chains wanting to set up calls with us.
Overnight we became a player in space.
Fast forward this sparked our growth and we ended up landing clients like Denny’s, Famous Dave’s, O’Charley’s, Firehouse Subs, Papa Murphy’s, and tons of their brands and went from 0-250 employees in 24 months and processing over 300 million worth of phone orders.
It was the Oliver Anthony effect. No ad spend, no connections, just thinking outside of the box to build that initial credibility to spark the kindling to the flame.
We leveraged all of these publications to get more and more clients for years.
So the moral of this story is you too can tap into the Oliver Anthony effect if you're creative and you think outside of the box you can overnight build up your credibility as a business owner or founder.
